There's a lot of interesting things we could explore in regards to religion in Japan, but to understand religion, we first need to understand the basic state of Buddhism and Shinto in Japan.

The following plot displays results from a survey about religion by NHK.

It should be noted that similar surveys could show very different results. For example, if this were multi-select, more people might select Shinto. Also, this survey specifically asked for religions that people "actually" believed in1. If this instruction was not included, many of the people who replied "None" may answer Buddhism or Shinto.

While there may be arguments about the "accuracy" of this particular survey (or other similar surveys), there are a few interesting points to note from this survey result:
